In cooler temperatures (below 70°F or 21°C), clean the feeder every 3 to 5 days to prevent mold and fermentation.
When it’s hot (above 80°F or 27°C), clean the feeder every 1 to 2 days. Sugar water spoils quickly in heat, which can harm hummingbirds.
Even if it’s not cleaning day, rinse the feeder with hot water before refilling to reduce residue buildup.
Avoid honey, red dye, or additives. These can spoil faster and encourage mold growth, requiring more frequent cleaning.
Use warm water, mild soap, and a feeder brush or bottle brush to scrub the feeder thoroughly. Rinse well to remove soap residue.
Any sign of mold or black residue means the feeder should be cleaned immediately—don’t wait for your next scheduled cleaning.
Regular maintenance ensures the health of your visiting hummingbirds. Use reminders or a calendar to stay consistent, especially in summer.
